Scenic park with some history. Could use more interpretive signs for the battlefield.
Great place to get away for camping, or to have a picnic for the day.
The park has a very nice open area for picnics. There is a huge yard with kiddy playground and a very large shelter with open sides. The shelter has numerous electric outlets.
The road to the campsites was covered with leaves so I could not see the potholes. Some were quite large and gave my Jeep a jolt. The sites are all near water, either the Pecatonica river or the lake. It looks like a haven for mosquitoes but I saw numerous bat houses so maybe the mosquitoes aren't bad. I didn't stay the night, I just stopped to have a look at the sites. The low numbered sites off to the northwest were a variety of small or large, first come first serve. Most were well shaded by tall trees. Several had a slip that appeared a good place to launch a canoe or kayak. The high numbered sites, I think 36-38 were on the far north side and there were only three but they were huge sites that could easily accommodate 6 tents or a camper and several tents. The fire ring in most places was a circle of large rocks but would suffice well enough. No firewood at the campground, there is no attendant and some people were not paying for it so now you have to get wood elsewhere.
This campground is a favorite of mine now due to the cost, beauty, and the fact that you camp on the river.
The only negative thing about this campground is that my legs started to itch real bad after entering the forest. I rubbed antibacterial and cream on my legs after that, and the itching was gone, but it was a very bad experience. It is not poison ivy/oak, and did not leave a rash, but it was annoying
Almost forgot to mention. There is no electric or water AT the campsites. Toilets are either pit or port - a -johnny. You can get electric at the shelter and there is drinking water available at the entrance so bring your jugs.
Very nice.
